Dalamedia's antics

Reflections on Radiagate

Reflections on Radiagate by International news channel.

Radiagate and collusion of certain prominent Media personnel like Barkha Dutt and Vir Sanghvi with corporates and political parties, a subject treated as contentious and ignored large scale by most Indian mainstream media is now being covered by the International broadcast media, a much welcome step.

Listening Post is a programme that scrutinises the status and role of Media in different countries. The programme aired on January 30th 2011 had an excellent review, briefing on the current status of Indian Media and delivered a concise reflection of the issues around Radiagate (The corporate lobbyist who was at the centre stage of scrutiny involving 2G Spectrum scandal and the exposed Corporate, Government and Media nexus).

Much to appreciate is the efforts of Meenakshi Ravi, a broadcast journalist and assistant producer of the programme Listening Post aired by Al-Jazeera English news channel. Such intreprid attempts are to be applauded and recognised, particularly at a state when there has been a blackout on covering the issue by the mainstream television media. The programme also highlighted the increasing role of social networks and social media such as facebook, twitter and blogging platforms in keeping the issue alive. Particular to mention is the fact that the issue is still very much under discussion on twitter and twittizens are still debating with some of the media personnel like Barkha Dutt asking for explanation. The segment on Global voices featured opinion of youth and bloggers who expressed their cynicism over the inaction of Media organisations involved in reprimanding the journalist involved in the act perceived by most viewers  and senior editors in the media industry as a breach of journalistic ethics and misuse of public trust.

Rajdeep Sardesai shows Character.

Rajdeep Sardesai and IBN shows Character!

In an unprecedented gesture Mr Rajdeep Sardesai aired his apology on 20th December 2010 to his channel viewers on TV for the wrongly attributed twitter errors. We would like to deeply appreciate this gesture and hope that the apology is sincere and wish the commitment is followed.

We as consumers,  would extend our cooperation in pointing out if need be any discrepancy or issues of compatibility that we may come across in the future as viewers and hope they would take it in their best interest. We are hoping and looking forward to find more neutral and unbiased programmes and shows from now on from IBN.

Fake Tweets and twisting messages is Ubiquitous.

A case for concern.

The IBN twitter feed faking fiasco brought us to light some of the dark corners of public opinion manipulation and selective postings in the Broadcast media. Following the expose, many readers and fellow twitteratis contacted us with their stories on how their Twitter and Facebook feeds were manipulated in the name of Web Buzz and their messages twisted to the taste of the debate's agenda.

Suresh Nakuha contacted us with his story of how his twitter feed was misconstrued and how he felt it implied and misrepresented that he was actually supporting a particular political party, while in reality he was not.

The case though not as serious as CNN IBN 's fake tweets misdaemonor, is a case that rings a bell on how serious television channels regard their viewer feedback and messages.

Sureshmsg

Today Swathipradeep has covered the story in detail in her blog. The issue contested by Suresh Nakuha is an case of context manipulation, where the intended context and message of the feed was manipulated to the annoyance of the original poster. What was bothering in the documents we received is that the particular channel Times Now showed a lack of concern to thoroughly check and investigate on Suresh's complaint that his feed was actually misconstrued, their initial response was blithely, but his persistence made them investigate the case and conduct an inquiry on the issue. We could appreciate the fact that Times Now at least bothered to investigate it and according to them have reprimanded those responsible for the act in their team. We also feel that the talkshow on Times Now could have been careful in dealing with user feeds and avoided their tweet feed mishap which is serious and affecting.

Needless to say, in the age of interactive feedbacks and the developing connected TV technologies, it will be impossible for Television channels to survive if they do not adapt and cater to the needs of the growing technologically conversant viewers in a fair and honest way. It will be good if Television channels have proper mechanism set up to redress such issues and grievance in a fast and efficient manner. It can be suggested that they could consider setting up a dedicated feedback and query readdress mechanism that can help track and solve complaints of this nature. To start with, an online forum that is directly monitored by the CEO's and Chief Editors of the news channel who will also participate with the viewers and sort out problem if any could be implemented.

More details of Suresh's case can be found here: http://swathipradeepworld.wordpress.com/2010/12/20/times-now-twists-tweets/

Claims by IBN Refuted

Claims by IBN Refuted by Tweeples and Readers
Read this before: http://dalalmedia.posterous.com/36632972

It is not in our intention to keep harping on this particular story, but many readers and twitters in the open group #dalalmedia have pointed that the reason cited by IBN in the apology it issued for the lapse as an unintentional error seemed only as a naive excuse and it was dismissing the facts presented in the case rather frivolously.

IBN Apology : http://ibnlive.in.com/news/an-apology-for-an-error/137749-3.html

IBN initially claimed via their twitter feeds and website that the comments were picked up from ibnlive.com and should have been attributed to the web and not to twitter and that there has been a mixup of comments, however cross checking in their website they referred we found no such users or could find any of the comments that was aired in the programme.
One twittezen @Barbarindian cross checked the list of users and reported that he could not find any users shown in the list of those who responded in the website. One other twittezen @holydevil said that he could still register an ID aired in the programme in Ibnlive's own website implying that such an user could not have existed.
It is advised that readers refer to the website of IBN from where they said they have picked up the comments and crosscheck them yourself :http://ibnlive.in.com/blaze/rajdeepsardesai/answer/topic/1/172744.html

Here are the links to @Barbarindian 's http://yfrog.com/h2zgdp and @holydevil analysis http://twitpic.com/3gp57q (he could register the ID maira_t12 on IBN website even after the formal apology)

The bigger question raised through this the issue of media ethics especially the rife practise of astroturfing (that is generally seen in the leading broadcast media of today which seems to have clouded the profession of news reporting) has not been addressed which is disappointing.

We hope IBN would take this event as an oppurtunity to show the base consumers of news and views they create, that they do carry unbiased reporting and analysis and air opinion from a spectrum of people with differing views. Same could be copied for most media channels and broadcasters.

Notes:

Swathipradeep in her blog gives a recap of the IBN fiasco with a link to the complete video telecast of the programme:

Avijit suggest that if any reader feel aggrieved on this they may write to the National Broadcasters association in New Delhi at this address http://www.nbanewdelhi.com/ his letter can be found in the comment section of the original post on 'using fake twitter ID's' in this blog.

Many are expressing their outrage in twitter with the following hashtags #dalalmedia #barkhagate #ibnlies

IBN - Using Twitter ID's which dont exists.

CNN-IBN MEDIA MANIPULATION: CAUGHT RED HANDED WITH INCRIMENATING EVIDENCES

I was watching the programme ‘Should Lobbying be Legalised’ a debate chaired and moderated by Rajdeep Sardesai in CNN-IBN’s website. The Programme was aired on 16/12/2010 and was available in the CNN-IBN website. Customarily in such programmes they run Twitter comments to reflect from social media supposedly to show what the public believe and say.  I was appalled to find that these comments were manipulated, i.e. ghost created and run by IBN’s own team, all those dubious comments seem to reflect the sentiments and to show and thrust the fact that people are for ‘LOBBYING’ and they support  ‘LEGALISING LOBBYING’. Please see and read the comments yourself from screenshots of the programme. On suspicion, I crossed checked the twitter handles that were shown in the programme and none were authentic or existing.

The twitter handles were with the following comments.

Twitter Handles: Selective comments, and no public profiles visible!

@t_mayank - “The Government should recognise and organises lobbyist in India”   http://twitter.com/t_mayank

@bhumika_14 - “Why don’t we simply institutionalise lobbying!”   http://twitter.com/bhumika_14

@maira_t12 - “There is nothing wrong in lobbying it is like selling your product” http://twitter.com/maira_t12

@harish_p – “Lobbying should be just like anyother profession, just make them accountable” http://twitter.com/harish_p

@kala_s - “Many developed nations have organised lobbying why don’t we also do it” http://twitter.com/kala_s

The following images are of the Twitter ID’s profile at the time of finding this offence. (*It is possible that the IBN team could still manipulate these ID’s but one could easily find this if they would do this with timestamps! Be vigilant)

Incriminatingly of the five Twitter ID’s shown, three does not exist and even the two that exist (kala_s, and harish_p) looks like a dubious profile with no tweets in their page nor with any worthy followers.

If they are as perceived to be, this is a clear breach of trust and honesty and a clear evidence of Media manipulating and directing Public opinion, which is illegal, dishonest and unethical and could be a scam by itself, this is a dangerous trend clearly a propaganda strategy for deception and should never be encouraged in any civilised democratic society where public opinions constitute a great deal for reforms, growth and governance that shape policy and help in progress, unless strict punishments are not enforced for such offence and creepy behaviour by the Mainstream media India would never be able to achieve an healthy society. The debate show thus seem to have an agenda and could be directing the viewers in the line. They should definitely explain this.

Update:

CNN IBN news channel and Rajdeep tendered an apology to this here http://t.in.com/ccba. On behalf of bloggers and twitters, we all shall appreciate their efforts for accepting some responsibility on this, though we should say we see the apology more as their corporate gesture and indication of some practice changes. What we as consumers of media and those with a need for unbiased news would like to see is a real change in the policy of both the company and the individuals in it who conduct and report news. It is a request from us all the conscious and patriotic citizens to the creed of journalist to maintain an upkeep of ethics and work conscientiously, you will definitely be rewarded for this. We are all striving together to create an India that is not only economically developed but also would serve as an epitome of values, ethics and culture as it used to be for centuries.

supplement to update:

1. Many twitters have pointed out that the said apology still has some discrepency in that the conversations that are aired are nowhere to be seen in the weblink that is posted on the apology letter.

2. One twittizen also pointed to the fact that he could still register an ID that is shown in the respone in the IBN's own website negating the fact that these id's could have sent messages as a private conversation, as they could have never excisted in the first place, even if the media house would like us to buy the theory that the id's were not of twitter but from visitors on IBN site (which itself is an acceptance of bias).

3. A cursory check on the weblink responses also indicate that most of the responses were against legalising lobbying, however the programme featured an impression that the alternative was the favoured case, which did not show or reflect a standard of reporting.

4. Some twittizens who have been asking for a just cause and a responsible media with ethics have also tried and registered the id's shown in the show just lately and they report that they could and have registered some id's so if you are checking these id's now they could have been taken and hopefully will also be reflecting the same issues covered here.
